Waking up to the “Morning News” is not my most favorable thing to watch in the world. Fox News yells in propaganda, finding a way to squeeze in the most senseless stories enough to keep it interesting. In my amusement, a lady had been found arrested for dressing up as the character “Elsa” from the Disney movie Frozen. Posing that she was freezing parts around town and her pictures went viral. Although at that time, winter gave us some sporadic moments of freezing for almost a month. I remember keeping an extra coat in the car; for unexpected weather in this great state of Texas no less. A mentor told me, “If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready” That quote saved my life! Funny how life can throw you a curve ball when you’re not prepared to catch it. Living in uncertain times can be enough to make you unsure about where you are. If you are unsure of where you are, then it allows uneasiness to come through. Uneasiness leaves to door open to doubt and doubt is the root of fear.
The reason why the character “Elsa” was so relative, is because in this movie, she was uncertain about her own power. She was born with the power to freeze, but had no sense to control it. She had the ability to produce a winter holiday, but without control, it could easily turn into a detrimental blizzard storm. Her parents went to the wise troll of the land and he revealed to them that if Elsa were to allow fear to come in, then the power she had would become pernicious. Her parents only sought the help because beforehand Elsa hurt her only sister in the mist of trying to have a good time. Therefore forcing Elsa to live in solitude, never to interact with others based upon her parents fear to protect her from hurting another person.
We can all can relate to this story in these uncertain times today. We’ve all gone through winter seasons in life one time or another. This allows the uneasiness to open the door and fear walks in. That fear then hardens the heart and you become cold towards your relationships. Forcing you to isolate from those who love you, neglect the opportunity to enjoy life as it comes. The beautiful things become unsightly and the darkness takes the place of where light use to shine so bright. Now looking in the mirror, you would be looking at something that once stood tall, now on its knees barely catching a breath.
There are times when you may be at the peak of your season, then life comes and cuts you off as if your Fall, Spring and Summer never existed. Some people may have had their best years in high school. Some moments may have been real good when both parents were still together. Remember that time when you first fell in love and you did everything you could to impress the other party? Much like this winter that seems so unsure, things can fall in life no matter how mighty. How could God still say He would never leave us, nor forsake us? Then have the audacity to say His mercies are new every morning? Does the Lord really seek to restore us when we go through such downfalls?
“Consider it a great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. But endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing. Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him.” James 1:2-5
While walking to my car later on, the most liberating thing that I have seen all day really caught my eye. Being 32 degrees and a brisk wind, a little young boy was flying a bright red kite right on an empty parking lot. No adult supervision, just freedom. Nothing but a clear parking lot and he was gone with the wind. Seeing such a full scope in that moment brought so much joy in my heart.
Throughout many years of solitude, Elsa grew up cold and distant towards others. When it was time for Elsa to receive her crown as queen of the land, she allowed fear to take grip and her freezing ability was revealed. Right then some skeptics from out of town called her a monster. She then ran away but froze her own kingdom without knowing it! Fear lead her to curse her atmosphere. Later on, it took an act of true love to break the curse over the land.
This challenged me to think that despite whatever we go through, we can find a way to fly a kite through anything. This kite can represent forgiveness, restoration, joy and/or peace. No matter what it looks like, no matter how cold the situation, no matter how great the loss. We can learn to fly a kite even when Elsa sends the storm.
- What do you think about the storms in your life?
- Share a time when you found a kite in the middle of a storm.
Selah: There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. So the one who fears has not reached perfection in love. 1John 4:18
